So I guess the big thing a lot of people are taking from the teasing release of Deadlocked, Chapter 2 is the return of Niall. I know already
a lot of people have written on the subject but I haven’t read any of it, wanting to keep my opinion unbiased for now. Also I was rather distracted with finals and then Christmas.
With Niall here and us getting chapter 2 it’s a fairly safe bet there’s a whole lot going down in chapter 1. At least, that’s what I’m hoping. When Penguin released that excerpt from chapter 3 of Dead Reckoning last year, we missed the nice big fight between Pam and Eric and all of Pam’s insinuations that Eric is a shitty husband. I suspect no less intrigue for chapter 1 of Deadlocked.
First I’ll say that I just love how Sookie deals with Niall. Talk about the ultimate in expecting royal privilege and treatment. “I am the only living prince of Faery,” tells you just how much Niall thinks of himself – as it should be answer enough. Niall is a royal, he’s powerful and he’s ancient. That alone leaves him to expect people should not question his actions or his motivations and they should speak to him only in the most dignified ways – or so he expects. Of course, it’s not to say he hasn’t earned the right to expect that sort of treatment, not from other fairies…you know, in Faery. In the human world, on the other hand, talking to a mostly human American, as Sookie calls herself who hasn’t barely been a part of her life, he hasn’t quite gotten there.
I can’t wait to find out how Sookie managed to convince Niall to reopen the portal to the human world. Or perhaps she didn’t have a choice. My first thought at seeing Claude there in her house was “Oh, no. Tell me she did not let him move back in.” But there is no indication that he did, in fact move back in. The only thing known there, is that Claude assumed truthful knowledge from Murry, the bad fairy and all around talker-of-ways-to-kill-humans-instead-of-actually-killing-them.
So Niall didn’t actually curse Dermot, there is a reunion with tears and bowing and a brand new mystery to solve. Yay! If Murry, a water fae, said Niall cursed Dermot, where could he have gotten that information? He already had ties to Brenadan so the most obvious answer would be from him. I doubt this will be of high priority in the mysteries to solve when it comes down to Sookie’s narration. Most of the fact finding will probably occur in Faery and as a result, off page. But Claude got his wish and now he gets to go back to Faery. How that will affect his relationship with Sookie, Dermot and the remaining Fae left behind remains to be seen.
The one line that gave me pause to think was this:
“Because of Niall’s questions about Claude and Me, Dermot’s request struck me as kind of weird. I just wasn’t in a fairy-loving mood, no matter how innocently he intended it. And truthfully, I wasn’t sure he meant we shouldn’t do more than sleep.”
This makes me think that either Niall is wondering about Claude’s agenda or if he’s wondering if there are possibilities for having yet another grandchild. The way it’s phrased makes me think he doesn’t approve of either. Niall knows Claude is selfish and would do something only if it would serve him or it was a direct command from Niall. There is no mention of whether Niall approves of Claude’s chosen sexuality but, Claude has already proven he can be quite fluid. With the dwindling number of female fairies, it’s hard to imagine what Niall would want from Claude. There’s a lot to speculate on there.
Now on to Dermot. I love how Sookie stands up to Niall for him. Despite Dermot’s age, in so many way’s he is like a child. When it comes to knowledge of the Fae and fighting, he most definitely shows his skill. But when it comes to his person, his state of mind and his feelings of belonging, Dermot is constantly shown as incredibly fragile. He cannot even stand up to Niall, who treats him like the red-headed step-child, so Sookie does it for him. That’s just something I love about who Sookie is. No matter how badly treated she is and how much she’s willing to put up with from people treating her like crap, she’ll stand up for someone else when she see’s it happening to them.
I’m not going to address the breathing or kissing issue between Niall and Sookie and the breathing of the fairy scent. There’s already an excellent article about it HERE for anyone who wants to read it.
So Sookie doesn’t believe Dermot was in his right mind when he aligned himself with the water fae and when her parents died and I’m inclined to agree with her. There is nothing in Dead Reckoning to assume any malevolence from Dermot. If fact, I’d go as far as to say that CH has done something wonderful in creating a replacement Claudine. Someone who has no agenda or alliance other than to Sookie.
In Dead Reckoning, Sam says of Dermot
“He treats you like a Queen.”
Granted this is some nice foreshadowing into all the ways Eric doesn’t, and provides a nice teaser for the future issues with Oklahoma but it gives a little insight into how Dermot looks at Sookie. She cares for him and took him in when he was lost, creating, for him a very special view of Sookie. Additionally, Dermot says,
“Since Niall made sure I was put out of Faery…since I roamed around crazy for so long… I don’t feel part of the sky clan, and the water clan wouldn’t have me even though I allied with them. While I was cursed,” he added hastily. “But I’m not a human, and I don’t feel like one. I can’t really pass for a man for more than a few minutes. The other fae at Hooligans, the cluster of them…they’re only united by chance.” Dermot shook his golden head. Though his hair was longer than Jason’s shoulder length to cover up his ears, he’d never looked more like my brother. “I don’t feel like a fairy anymore. I feel…”
“Like a stranger in a strange land,” I said.
“Maybe so.”
- Dead Reckoning, pg. 213
In this passage, there’s a pretty clear indication that there’s no one he’s tied to. No one he owes anything to. In that, he has only Sookie. And in the way she looks after him for all his mental fragility, he can look after her from the bigger more immanent dangers.
I noticed a lot of talk about incest with the release of this chapter. There was a lot of talk about it in the last book too. God-forbid she finds her twice removed male 20 -something looking cousins attractive. Oh my god. Shout and scream and run for the hills. If that is the only thing people take from all this fairy stuff, those people need to have a think on their own sexual issues. First off, for the fairies, incest is no biggie. It’s actually pretty normal.
For all those people screaming about incest, well, I guess they over looked the whole Claudine and Colman were already related discussion in Dead And Gone. The two were “not so closely related,” according to Claudine, which means that they are, in fact, related. Otherwise, why say it at all. If Brenadan was going to blame anyone for the loss of magic among the fairies it should be his own people for all the incestuous breeding that seems to be happening. Incest was a common thing pretty much until about 100 years ago. It has been fairly taboo for immediate family but even today in many countries it is still legal to marry a first cousin. The royal families of Europe did it all the time. Every one of the remaining royal families in Europe are distantly related to each other because of this. The big reason for the taboo on incest is the result abnormalities that happen with it. Abnormalities like mental retardation. And infertility.
But then there aren’t so many female fairies anymore that they can afford to be picky.
But anyway, the incest question, with Sookie is so off the table. I wish people would get over it. There are so many more interesting things to talk about with the fairies that are not related to incest. You know, like how they eat flesh.
Now to my other new favorite character, Mustapha Khan. If ever there was a better replacement for Bobby, his name is Mustapha. Despite the roughness of their greeting, Mustapha is the type who catches on quick. And as a werewolf, that’s a good thing. As an added bonus it also means Sookie doesn’t have to hear everything that goes on in his head. I like that Mustapha for all his attitude has a sense of humor when relaying Eric’s message. There is no idolization of vampires with him, and with that comes a more balanced viewpoint.
I can’t pretend to understand Pam’s message from the context. Much like her outburst in Dead Reckoning, claiming what a wonderful husband Eric is and all her pointed looks at Sookie, we know it’s big but until there’s more info, we don’t know what, except it’s safe to say, with the penultimate book that the hard time will part of the homestretch of events.
Likewise, Eric “getting ready” could mean anything. The summary of the book says a body is dumped in front of his house. No idea yet if this happened in chapter 1 or not. Though it could also mean Eric’s getting rid of witnesses. Or maybe he’s fixing up Fangtasia to look especially befitting for a regal visitor. Who knows?
Though it’s safe to say neither of them have done much reconciliation since he bit her.
Now for Jannalynn, I read a few speculations where people are thinking she’s the one leaving the body in front of Eric’s house. I seriously doubt it. First off, that would be really fucking stupid. And while Jannalynn might be excellent in the technique of brute force, she’s no dummy. Charlaine Harris really has a nack for getting to the root female jealousy and malfeasance. I think we’re going to see here a similar situation to Debbie, just handled differently. Jannalynn is smarter than Debbie and she knows Sookie better and longer. But she’s also vindictive and very, very jealous. Maybe more so than Debbie. I’ll put good odds on her being dead by the end of the book. Damn that shifter, Sam. He’s really got shit taste in women.
So that’s about all I got for now. I might think of more. What are people’s thoughts on Chapter 2?
